RECOMMENDED: A VOICE THAT IS SPECIAL AND DISTINGUISHABLE

Very expressive, totally appropriate choices she made intuitively to deliver the music in the best of emotion, and the voice is immediately recognizable as hers.  Has much more uplifting quality than Khanh Ly's alto/contralto

In this one, with primitive beats, she added a little syncopation here and there. She is natural and that's why she is so good. She makes me like TCS!

SUN AND MOON FROM MISS SAIGON

HERE IS MY FAVORITE STAGE LIVE PERFORMANCE, IN 2005 AFTER I HAD LOST THE ABILITY TO PROJECT MY VOICE, BUT STILL SANG (so i sounded like a child). My duet partner was perhaps the best male vocalist I have worked with, and a great pianist as well):

Gươm kiếm long lanh màu thạch bích
Bạc trắng vòng đai, ta khóc ta
Tôi chẳng đứng đây để tế non sông
Đã phôi pha hết chuyện vua Hùng
Nay mai hóa đá người vong quốc
Gãy mất cơ đồ, tượng đứng trông
Tôi chẳng đứng đây, trên đỉnh phù vân
Xót thương hồn phách của vua Trần
Nếu ai có nhớ tình sông núi
Xin thắp cây hương trước mộ phần

GIONG HAT HA THANH AFTER 1975?

...if this was sung by Ha Thanh, it speaks for the quality of her voice, natural and she was born with it. She does not inject the Hue esoteric quality into her voice here.  If it is Ha Thanh, this was recorded long after 1975, perhaps after 1990, and yet her voice was still at the top form, better than ever. If the poetry was by Nhu Thuong from Ban Me Thuot, it was somebody i knew from 2013. And, if the composer was the singer Anh Tuyet, then this was a composition made by somebody who knows Vietnamese folk music, and BRAVA to her...Very seldom did I hear something that I just have to praise...

After consulting a singer friend who knows Ha Thanh's voice, I have to agree with her this is NOT Ha Thanh of Hue. reasons below:

this does not sound like Ha Thanh of Hue. HT's voice was much thinner and yet more mature. Plus, she has the "glottal stop" of Hue's accent injected into her singing. Her voice also has more obvious "passage" from MID VOICE (very light and lots of steady yet very soft ringing resonance) to HEAD VOICE (often legato, very beautiful).  This tape does not have the Ha thanh's characteristics of the past although it is the same lyric soprano quality. it appears like the type of voice enhanced by technology. And it's also more "dieu". Ha Thanh is not "dieu" in her singing. She sings like she were standing in a choir.  Another uniqueness of Ha Thanh's voice is the total lack of energy, although she flies high in the lyric soprano range, very beautiful vibrato.
it's awful if someone else sang and said it was ha thanh. I do acknowledge that a voice may change depending on the level of training and alteration made to the breath and the register.  Mine did change depending on practice and training or simply losing it. In Ha Thanh's case, she did not "retrain" her voice in the U.S, and even if she did, she would not lose the "Hue" tonal and consonant articulation.  That I think sticks for life.
But even if a voice changes, something is still consistent as unique in the voice. (In my case, it's the sweet vulnerability at the end of the phrase when i had to go into my head voice and the resonance in the midvoice with certain words when i utilize the breath and the power of the register.  When I don't utilize it, my voice is very light and immature.
In sum, this voice does not have the ha thanh's unique quality. It is also too young for the maturity of Ha Thanh's voice (a characteristic that appeared even in the 1960s when she was in her late 20s). A voice does not get young with age. Maturity in the voice came with the register and with age. Ha Thanh's voice was very mature even in her 20s.  Another characteristic of Ha Thanh's voice is her lack of sustained breath support although she has very long legato, meaning a naturally born talent.

The way to check into the authenticity whether this was ha thanh's voice in the U.S. was to check with her family, including her sister Ms. Lien Nhu.

my favorite song SUN AND MOON

I love this song, the score, the lyrics and I love performing it with Ryan. It captured my younger days, although I did this one when I was 50+ years old.

***
There is a reason why I didn't want to stay just a lawyer, a judge, or a professor or to soar high in my profession...
...and how I might have broken my parents' heart wanting to travel this earth like a barefoot contessa...
Ryan and I had no practice. We just did it.

about film stars in non-communist Vietnam, pre-1975:

Kim Vui trước 1975, courtesy of Ms. Hoang Lan Chi.

more of French singer Barbara, the sentimental Edith Piaff

THE SWEETEST MOST SUGARY MOST EXPRESSIVE VOICE FROM France

Thank you, THE VIETNAMESE WRITER Tran Vu, for introducing this tape and this voice.  The singer bears great resemblance to the late Maria Callas: very strong nose, distinctive facial features, dark hair, angular face and beautiful bone structure, and a sensuous, versatile mouth that is the true signature of a singer.  A real singer often has a very large mouth and curvy, expressive lips, because articulation and breath control requires movement and amplification.  A little cherry closed geisha mouth would not do the job!

This is the contemporary voice that far exceeds the norm because it is so sugary (ngot lim).  Articulation so perfect. Expression as sublime!   The music, styled as spoken "parole", is absolutely beautiful.  I think that Vietnamese contemporary singers should watch this tape and hear this voice. singing as speaking, straight to and from THE SOUL.

she is magnificent, but...a question is asked:

it is more likely than not that she is Vietnamese American, not Vietnamese who has just been here for a year and immediately in high school, as she claimed...
Judging from the almost perfect English.
It is possible that being extraordinarily talented in music, she is also extraordinarily talented in languages to achieve such an accent free manner of speaking, but...
I also detected some imperfection in her spoken English.
So it is possible that in Vietnam she belonged to that "privileged" class who received English training at a very early age, like 6 or 7 years old, if the family has fortunes, lessons and exposure to the language from native English speaking individuals or those that have super native linguistic ability like the scholars and language professors trained in the West.  Yes, I have met those rich kids...

Being talented, one has NO reason to tell anything but the truths about one's background.
What is the truth?
Also, her nose seems to be cosmetically altered.
But, we keep an open mind...

what is good singing and good music

Here is an example of how to jazz up a piece of music originally composed as music of tonality, with expressive voices that touch the soul. The pianist has "jazzed up" the piece:

ONE OF THE BEST ACTORS OF OUR TIME: CHRISTOPHER WALKEN

An expert at playing dark characters, weirdows, and villains, he wins your heart (at least mine) in a memorable comic role in The Maiden Heist. A terrific dancer.  The suicidal Vietnam soldier in The Deer Hunter, which won him an Oscar so early in his career.  Leading man and a potential witness in the untimely death of Hollywood beauty Natalie Wood.

topping the world: voices of the 21st century: Dimash and Dmitri singing Adagio

Born on the land between Europe and Asia (the true Eurasians)

Dimash from Kazakhstan, chose to be pop vocalist while having the range of an operatic singer
distinguishing himself in the high register
but note that at the high notes, he kept his mid voice
it is only toward the end did he switch to his head voice (for a male, sometimes described as falsetto
but from my ear-capacity, not exactly, it's the head register and then the whisper register (resembling the top sopranos of the world). This reminds me of the extinguished castrati of the past  (Renaissance Italy)

COMPARE

The late Dmitri of Russia
a true operatic star
Born in Siberia, Tatar
sang in the baritone range, velvety, warm, and rich
but resembling a lyrical tenor at times, of bel canto tradition

AND NOTE:

Both of them began the song in their natural voice (almost no breath support)
and then they go into their projection, resonance and tremendous breath support for their
voice to soar across the orchestra, as though they each possess three different voices in one person...

AND,
their stage presence:  two different men:

Dimash crosses gender, so slender and delicate

Dmitri, so manly, so virile, epitome of a male man/man male

They both become so powerful, overwhelming us, so much into their song, so engaged, so taken by their passion in music ...there is nothing fake, phony, orchestrated in them or about them

that's what it takes: the geniuses of the musical and performing arts

at the turn of the 21st century, on the land that joins Europe and Asia...

LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE IN AUDIENCE REACTION:

In China, the young drool over the high notes and the perfection of the soaring voice

In Russia, the audience are so grave in awe, mesmerized by the operatic power and the sentiment that fills the air...

BRAVO!
